Dennis Lendrem 1923-2003 Sinking of HMS Medway 1942

For an account by Dennis Lendrem of the sinking of HMS Medway during the evacuation of Alexandria 30 June 1942:

HMS Medway

Dennis Lendrem trod water for an hour before being picked up.  On returning to Alexandria dressed only in his vest and shorts he was kitted out with a captured Italian uniform and told to make his way to the naval base at Port Said.  Dennis along with his friend Ginger and another pal commandeered a car and drove to Port Said.  On turning up dressed in Italian uniforms and without papers they were promptly arrested at the first road block.  Ginger and his pal were released almost immediately but when Dennis failed to correctly name the winners of the FA Cup in 1939 he was held overnight until an interrogator from military intelligence had interviewed him the following morning.
