The Lendrems of Virginia?

The main wave of Lendrems emigrating from Ireland to the US was in 1846 but as this recent find shows there were Lendrems living in Virgina in the 18th century.

James- Bowie, only son of
John Bowie, of Scotland, and his wife, Judith (Catlett)
Bowie, was born about 1746 at his father's home, "The
Hill," near Port Royal, Caroline County, Virginia. Went
to school at the Academy in Port Royal, which even in
the early days of Virginia \vas an institution of consider-
able note. A man's associates often serve as an index to
his character, and a letter found among some old papers
in the possession of James Bowie's descendants, show his
companions were men of culture. The communication
referred to was written March 16, 1764, from Edinburgh,
Scotland, by Thomas Lendrem, who had gone from Vir-
ginia to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh.

The writer comments upon the society he found in
Scotland ; tells his friend that the girls of the latter coun-
try, though very attractive, could not compare with the
stately damsels of Virginia ; cautions young Bowie
against succumbing to the charms of the latter before he
(Lendrem) could return ; sends friendly messages to his
former companions, the Timberlakes, and " my friend
Lewis," etc. Altogether llie letter is in the happy vein of
youth, such as a young man of culture would write to
his "chum " of today.

John William Lendrem 1881-1966

Breaking News: The New Zealand Connection

The New Zealand branch of the Lendrems appear to be descendants of John William Lendrem 1881-1966 from his first marriage to Harriet.  This means that the Australian, New Zealand and at least one branch of the North American Lendrems are all descendants of George Robert Lendrem 1822-1892 who emigrated from Ireland to England during the Irish Famine.  Will keep you posted!

Brian Renshaw - Robert Lendrem, James Lendrem, Rebecca Lendrem

Anyone know Brian Renshaw or anything of his interest in (George) Robert Lendrem?

Brian Renshaw - 01:15pm Oct 16, 2007 Irish (#73 of 126) Mark
My great-grandfather, Robert Lendrum (often misspelt as Lendrem) was born in Ashfield, Co Cavan in 1823. He was the son of James Lendrum and -I think- Rebecca (but Rebecca may have been Robert's sister -she was a witness at his wedding). They emigrated to Barnard Castle in England around 1844. Any information about the families of James and Rebecca in Ashfield would be greatly appreciated

John William Lendrem 1881-1966

John William was the eldest of three brothers.  His younger brother James (1891-1967) fought with the Durham Light Infantry in the Great War and his youngest brother George Robert (1893-1916) died during the last phase of the Somme.  John William had emigrated to the United States and enlisted with the US Expeditionary Force when the US joined the war in 1917.  After the war he married Ellen Andersen of Swedish parentage and they had a daughter Lois Lendrem (1920-2003).  Lois married Leonard Wichmann and eventually settled in Greenville, South Carolina.

Dennis Lendrem 1923-2003 Sinking of HMS Medway 1942

For an account by Dennis Lendrem of the sinking of HMS Medway during the evacuation of Alexandria 30 June 1942:

HMS Medway

Dennis Lendrem trod water for an hour before being picked up.  On returning to Alexandria dressed only in his vest and shorts he was kitted out with a captured Italian uniform and told to make his way to the naval base at Port Said.  Dennis along with his friend Ginger and another pal commandeered a car and drove to Port Said.  On turning up dressed in Italian uniforms and without papers they were promptly arrested at the first road block.  Ginger and his pal were released almost immediately but when Dennis failed to correctly name the winners of the FA Cup in 1939 he was held overnight until an interrogator from military intelligence had interviewed him the following morning.

George Lendrem abt 1842

George Lendrem was part of the mass migration of Lendrems from Ireland in the wake of the Famine.  He emigrated to Pennsylvania and married Louisa (Booth?).  He was employed as a book keeper in 1870.  Anyone know his father's name?  George Robert Lendrem?  He and Louisa had at least four male heirs.  Any descendants out there?

Thomas Lendrem marries Azuba Gleason Allen 1856

Thomas Lendrem mustered with the Pennsylvania Volunteers for the Union. Second son of Elizabeth Lendrem (Born Ireland 1821) and her first child born in Pennsylvania after emigrating from Ireland.  Probably the same Thomas Lendrem who mustered for the Union with the Pennsylvania Volunteers 33rd Infantry during the American Civil War in August 1863?

Trouble locating this branch.  Anyone know anything about a Sarah Jane Lendrem died in Horsham, Sussex?

George Robert Lendrem 1822-1892

Born in Ashfield in Co Cavan, Ireland, George Robert Lendrem emigrated to England from Ireland during the Irish Potato Famine to settle in Barnard Castle and give rise to the English Lendrems.  However, at the grand old age of 70 he must have taken a trip home and was drowned in the Irish Sea.  His death certificate has turned up in Ireland which explains why it wasn't in the English records even though he was by then a well established English resident.
Epilogue: on examining the death certificate it belonged to another George Robert Lendrem who died just three weeks old!  This did lead to the discovery of a new branch of the Lendrems who remained in Ireland after the Famine.  (See the Lendrem Family Tree.)

Lilian Lendrem b.1914 Elliott Hexham

How exciting!  As some of you may know we were contacted by descendants of Lilian's mum Mary Jane.  Thanks Sheila for the photographs of Lilian and Mary Jane - see the Gallery everyone!

North American Lendrems

Finally beginning to piece together the Lendrem family tree in North America.  It still needs a lot more work but we have around 50 US and Canadian citizens in the North American Lendrems family tree at ancestry.co.uk.  In particular, thanks to the Canadian authorities and their meticulous record keeping we now have details following the Irish migration during the mid nineteenth century.  So if you want to find out what happened to William, Henry, George, and Robert who they married and where they worked then this is the place for you.

Romola Lendrem Childs 1917-2010

See this link to the obituary of Romola Lendrem Childs 1917-2010 who passed away recently.  She was the daughter of John William Lendrem 1881-1966 who emigrated to the US and married Ellen Andersen.  In 1917 he joined the US Expeditionary Force when the US joined the Allies in the Great War 1914-1918.  Romola was born that same year.

John Lawley Lendrem

We have two references to a John Lawley Lendrem - both of them RAF promotions - one in 1941 and a second in 1947 - both in the London Gazette.
