The Drowning of George Robert Lendrem 1822-1892

For years now I believed that my great great grandfather George Robert Lendrem of Barnard Castle drowned in the Irish Sea on a pilgrimage to his old home in Ireland.

I was wrong.

BODY FOUND IN THE WEAR .
MELANCHOLY END OF A BARNARD CASTLE
MAN .
On Saturday, the body of a man, apparently about
sixty years of age, was found i n the Wea r at Fatfield,
by George and Thomas Oliver. Tbe attir e consisted
of black trousers, grey stockings, black kerchief, wit h
whit e spots, two dark-coloured waistcoats, brown
knitte d jersey, black coat. There was an old silver
snuff box, a white-handled pocket knife, and od. i n
money. A n inquest was afterwards held by M r
Graham, coroner. The only evidence adduced was
of the finding of the body, and the jury returned a
verdict of " Found drowned. " An order was made
for the interment of the body, which was much
decomposed, ss it apparently had been in tbe water
for about a month . The body was interred, not
being identified, at Fatfield. Our readers wil l regret
to bear that tbe body has since been identified as
that of George Robert Lendrum, an old and respected
inhabitant of Barnar d Castle. It wil l be remembered
tbat he was missing on the 24th of January, by his
friends in Durham, where he had been staying since
before Christmas last.
